The Purdue Research Foundation’s Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) offers services that support the economic development initiatives of Purdue University and benefit the university’s academic activities through commercializing, licensing and protecting Purdue intellectual property.
History
The Purdue Research Foundation’s Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) operates one of the most comprehensive technology transfer programs among leading research universities in the U.S. Services provided by this office support the economic development initiatives of Purdue University and benefit the university’s academic activities through commercializing, licensing and protecting Purdue intellectual property. The OTC is located in the Convergence Center for Innovation and Collaboration in Discovery Park District, adjacent to the Purdue campus.
OTC is managed by the Purdue Research Foundation, which received the 2019 Innovation and Economic Prosperity Universities Award for Place from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. Annual Report
In fiscal year 2024, Purdue Research Foundation’s Office of Technology Commercialization received 466 technology disclosures, executed 145 deals containing 224 different Purdue technologies, was awarded 290 issued patents, and filed 794 patent applications. The Foundation also reports the creation of 63 startup companies in FY2024 founded on Purdue University innovations.
Awards
In 2024, Purdue University researchers received 213 patents, ranking 7th among universities worldwide and #4 in the U.S. for patents. In 2023, Purdue was ranked #5 in the U.S. for patents. In 2020, OTC received 175 utility patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, ranking No. 6 in the world, first in the state of Indiana, and first in the Big Ten Conference. Purdue received the 2019 Innovation and Economic Prosperity Universities Award for Place from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. In 2018, the Office of Technology Commercialization was ranked 12th in the world among universities granted U.S. utility patents by the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association. The Milken Institute ranked the office 12th in its list of best universities for technology transfer, ranking Purdue No. 1 in the Midwest and No. 1 nationally among public institutions without a medical school.
